This powder check works OK. Nice that it has both an audio and a visual warning. My experience was that it was more "finicky" to set up and adjust the alarm levels than the Dillon powder check. Perhaps it was me. I was using it on an XL650 for 9mm.

Second one I purchased for my other Dillon Quick Change. Simple to install AND it has saved several no powder and 1 double load in my 147 9mm. $65 buck well spent!!!

Exceeded my expectations. Pretty simple to set up, and with a little care and attention during set up and change over I'm able to get consistent results.

Audible and visual alarms provide dual sensory inputs, and for me, a valuable addition to my reloading process.

This is a great little check to prevent large over or under charges. It does have one failing. There is a plunger for short (pistol) cases and one for long (rifle) cases. Unfortunately 300 Blackout cases fall in a dead zone. One plunger is too short, one is too long. I had to cut down the long...

Simple to set up and works great. While the amount of variance allowed is more than you would want for precision loading, it does a great job of detecting drastic over or under charges. Would definitely prevent a squib or overcharge that could cause firearm damage.

DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0

(141)
Manufacturers: Double-Alpha Academy
DILLON XL750 NOTE
The Dillon XL750 Powder Measure is angled such that the powder bar must extend directly over station #4 in the toolhead, and it cannot be repositioned. This Is not an issue if you have a short die in that station. However, if you wish to run a powder check in station #3, and a bullet dropper in station #4, as many do, this creates a serious problem. As a solution to this issue we are pleased to offer our  Extra-Short Dillon Powder Bar. (sold separately)
Frankfort Arsenal X-10 Note
This Powder check is not compatible with the Frankfort Arsenal X-10 press, due to interference with the Powder hopper activation arm.

Description:

The DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 (US Pat. Pending) is a great addition to any progressive reloading machine, helping to ensure the quality and safety of your reloaded ammo.

The unique new design uses a high-tech Reed Sensor and a magnet assembled to the plunger Rod, to assess if the charge in the case is of the correct height.

In the new 2.0 design, the Sensitivity Adjustability feature has been removed, in favor of placing the Reed sensor in a fixed position on a custom built PCB board. That fixed position is one that sets the accepted height variance to about 2.0-2.5mm, which is what we found to be the best setting for all. More than sufficient to pick up a double-charge, debris in the case or a case without powder.
This design change now allows all components to be PCB mounted on the custom board – making the electronics much more reliable and long lasting.

An additional improvement to the DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 is that the polymer shoe on the end of the plunger rod (which contacts the powder) has now been replaced with a brass CNC machined part, which helps to reduce the static electricity which could cause some powder to be lifted out of the case.

The DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 assembles onto a station immediately after your powder dropper, screwing into a standard die thread 7/8-14 station. However, unlike other powder check systems, the DAA product does not require a dedicated hole drilled through the tool head next to the station! It can be used on ANY progressive reloader which has an available station after the powder drop.

A powder-check does require the use of a station in your toolhead, so if you do not currently have an available station, you may need to combine your seating and crimping into one station using a 2-in-1 seat/crimp die to free up a station. These too are available from DAA.

The DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 is activated off the top rim of the case rather than the base of the shell plate, this means that no alarm will sound if no case is present. The powder sensing plunger (now with brass shoe) enters into the case mouth to rest on top of the charge and measure its height, sounding an alarm if the  powder level is either too low or too high. It provides both an audible beep alarm as well as a bright red LED light when triggered.

The DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 includes a replacement short plunger, suitable for use with rifle ammo. When using for rifle, simply replace the plunger, and assemble the steel rod upside down, using the end without the brass shoe to enter into the small case mouth. Parts included make this suitable to use with all pistol ammo (9mm and up) and for rifle from .223 and larger.

It’s compact size, slick and modern design, ease of setup and adjustability, make the DAA Magnetic Powder Check 2.0 the perfect accessory for your toolhead!

Summary of features and advantages:

  • Can be used on all toolheads, does not require a dedicated hole near station.
  • Assembles onto any 7/8-14 station
  • Provides both an audible AND a visual alarms
  • Acceptance range of powder level is approx. 2.0-2.5mm. Easily enough to trigger an alarm in case of a double-charge or no-charge situation.
  • Includes all parts for both rifle and pistol use
  • Activates off the rim of the case, so no alarm sound when no brass is present
  • Slim and compact design
  • Quality materials. Stainless Steel Rod, Brass shoe, with an aluminum red anodized die body. Rubber coated glass-fiber reinforced nylon for electronic housing
  • Custom PCB board for all electronic parts ensures reliability and longevity

Once adjusted is very good. Difficult but not impossible to adjust. The problem is when the correct amount of powder is in the case, it is difficult to hold the stem still while getting magnet at just the right height and then tighten the allen key. Then run the press and it will beep when the next round has the correct charge, so have to adjust several times until finally right. Once adjusted it is awesome, really a great tool to have. I would suggest having clips to hold the stem at the correct height so you can easily set the magnet correctly the first time, maybe clips to hold the magnet too before tightening down.

Using it on 6.5cm with h4350 it is not repeatable. All powder charges were verified on a sartorius scale with resolution to 0.02 grain, about 1 kernel of powder. The daa powder check sometimes sounded off and sometimes not on verified charges.

After the powder was weighed on the sartorius scale the case was filled thru a forester long neck powder funnel then placed back in the Dillon 750 for further cycle . The first of which was the daa powder check.

The brass end of the daa powder check would not fit thru the case neck so I had to use the plain rod end. There should be something in between using the plain steel end of the rod and the supplied larger brass end which was too big for the 6.5cm case neck. A bigger foot over the plain steel rod end may have been more repeatable.

Also the sensitivity of finding the sweet spot of the alarm can be a pain to find with the rod setting on a good powder charge. By the time you get the wrench into the magnet set screw you are compressing the powder charge, which makes the adjustment of the magnet void. Even pulling the rod out, marking magnet location and then adjusting magnet position was no help. They should have kept the sensitivity adjustment screw on the unit itself, or one that fine adjusts the center point of the go and no go point of the height range.

In short they need to come up with another brass end that will fit 223 and 6.5, they need to come up with a fine screw adjustment on the daa not the rod that adjusts the center point of the magnet sweet spot of the desired powder charge. As it now comes it may be 50% reliable, but 50% for a alarm is not acceptable. Concept is good, it just is not ready for prime time, needs more refinement. Tried for a 50% rating in stars like the unit performs but the program will not allow, so I settled at 2.

but as for the .44mag set up for 7gr in that case you can not see so before I got this I had to look with a torch through the die hole that this checker now fits.
I feel a lot safer now knowing that the right charge is in the cases .
it is easy to set up too

None the less, Double Alpha has pulled it off once again with another great product. Not only at a very competitive price, but a reasonable one as well. Also, the products are generally readily available to be shipped out and are received to very quickly, allowing us to get them installed and put to work. Thank you for your excellent products and comprehensive instructional videos on the net as well as the provided instructions. Keep up the good work DAA. I am new to reloading and thought this appeared to be a well thought out better built unit. It takes a few steps but installs relatively easily, especially with DAA's video. I like the sensitivity setting capability. I was initially trying out a range of powder levels to see what works best in a pistol and I was able to set the powder check to "beep" above and below the overall range levels. I like the fact that it audibly beeps, as well as, visually displays if too much or not enough powder and that it is silent if the powder is correct or if there is no case present. All in all, this was a good purchase for me with good pricing, quick shipping, and good results - so, 5 stars!

I load 9x19 and double loads with RS12 are easy to spot as powder will be everywhere and I am more worried about squib loads which this product prevents very well. Unfortunately 300 Blackout cases fall in a dead zone. One plunger is too short, one is too long. I had to cut down the long plunger so that it was still a bit longer than the short plunger. That works fine, however now I don't have a long plunger. Customer service has been fine before, I'm sure they'll send me another long plunger. This really should come with a medium length plunger for cases like this.
